Gross margin is the percentage of revenue remaining after subtracting the cost of goods sold (COGS). It is calculated as: (Revenue − COGS) ÷ Revenue × 100. If you sell a product for $50 and it costs $20 to make or buy, your gross margin is 60%. Gross margin tells you how much of every dollar of revenue is available to cover operating expenses, platform fees, shipping, marketing, and profit.
The reason gross margin matters more than gross profit (the dollar amount) is that it scales with your business. A 60% gross margin means you keep $0.60 of every revenue dollar at any sales volume. A $30,000 gross profit on $100,000 in revenue (30% margin) is structurally worse than a $30,000 gross profit on $50,000 in revenue (60% margin), even though the dollar amount is identical.
Most ecommerce businesses fail not because they lack sales, but because they do not understand their true gross margin after all costs are accounted for. The calculator results on this site show you that number before you commit to a product or pricing strategy.
There is no single "good" margin that applies across all ecommerce categories, but there are useful benchmarks. For physical product ecommerce, a net profit margin (after all costs including platform fees, shipping, marketing, and overhead) of 10–20% is considered healthy. Gross margins of 40–60% are typical for brands that are sustaining long-term growth. Margins below 20% gross leave very little room to cover operating expenses and marketing.
Platform matters significantly. Amazon FBA sellers typically achieve 15–30% net margins after accounting for all Amazon fees. TikTok Shop sellers can achieve higher margins on direct sales but face rapidly changing fee structures. Shopify direct-to-consumer brands often achieve the highest net margins (25–40%) because they avoid marketplace fees, but they bear their own marketing costs which can be substantial.
Category also matters. Low-priced, high-volume commodity products (phone cases, basic apparel basics) often operate on 15–25% gross margins. Premium or private-label products in less competitive categories can sustain 50–70% gross margins. Handmade and artisan products can sustain higher margins still, but scale is limited.
The most important margin benchmark is your own break-even point. Calculate your fixed monthly costs (software, storage, staffing), divide by your gross margin percentage, and you know the minimum monthly revenue required to break even. Any revenue above that threshold generates profit.
Amazon FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) involves multiple fee layers that add up to a significant portion of revenue. Understanding each layer is essential before committing to a product.
Referral fee: Amazon charges a percentage of the selling price as a referral fee. This varies by category — typically 8% for electronics, 15% for most general merchandise, 17% for clothing and accessories, and up to 45% for Amazon device accessories. The referral fee is unavoidable for all Amazon sales and is calculated on the total transaction including shipping.
FBA fulfillment fee: this is the per-unit fee Amazon charges to pick, pack, and ship your order. It is based on the item's size tier (small standard, large standard, oversize) and weight. As of mid-2026, small standard items under 1 lb cost approximately $3.06–$3.48 per unit in fulfillment fees. Large or heavy items can cost $5–$20+ per unit to fulfill.
Monthly storage fees: Amazon charges per cubic foot of space your inventory occupies in their fulfillment centers. Standard rates are approximately $0.78/cubic foot January–September and $2.40/cubic foot October–December (peak season surcharge). Long-term storage fees apply to inventory stored more than 365 days.
Additional fees: inbound placement fees (for sending inventory to fulfillment centers), aged inventory surcharges, return processing fees, and low-inventory-level fees can further reduce margins. TikTok Shop has grown rapidly into a significant ecommerce platform, but its fee structure is evolving and sellers need to understand what they are actually paying. As of mid-2026, TikTok Shop charges a platform commission fee of approximately 6% on most product categories, though this varies and has changed multiple times since the platform's US launch.
Affiliate commission is a major additional cost for TikTok Shop sellers. Most successful TikTok Shop products rely heavily on creator affiliates who promote products in exchange for a commission — typically 10–25% of the sale price. Shopify itself is a platform fee (subscription cost), not a marketplace commission the way Amazon or TikTok Shop are. A typical paid social acquisition cost for a physical product brand is $15–$50 per customer depending on the category, ad creative quality, and targeting. Shipping time is the other critical factor. Chinese-sourced dropshipping products often take 2–4 weeks to arrive, which drives high return rates and low repeat purchase rates. Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) is the revenue generated per dollar of advertising spend. A ROAS of 3x means every $1 in ad spend generates $3 in revenue. ROAS is the most commonly cited advertising metric in ecommerce, but it can be deeply misleading if used without understanding the margin context.
Break-even ROAS is the ROAS at which advertising spend generates exactly zero profit — not the target, but the floor below which advertising is destroying value. Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin. If your gross margin is 40%, your break-even ROAS is 2.5x. Any ROAS below 2.5x loses money. Any ROAS above 2.5x generates profit at a rate of (actual ROAS − break-even ROAS) × gross margin.
Many ecommerce sellers target a specific ROAS (like 3x or 4x) without calculating their actual break-even ROAS first. A 3x ROAS is excellent if your gross margin is 60% (break-even ROAS 1.67x), but is a money-losing proposition if your gross margin is 25% (break-even ROAS 4x). Target ROAS for profitability should be set at break-even ROAS plus enough headroom to cover operating costs and generate desired net profit. If break-even ROAS is 2.5x and you want 15% net profit on revenue, your target ROAS should be approximately 2.5 ÷ (1 − 0.15) = 2.94x or higher.
Returns are one of the most underestimated cost centers in ecommerce. The true cost of a return includes: the revenue lost from the returned item, the cost of return shipping (if seller-paid), the cost of restocking or disposing of the returned item, the original fulfillment cost (which is not refunded by Amazon FBA), and the customer service cost of processing the return. When all of these are added together, a returned item often costs more than the gross profit it originally generated.
Return rates vary significantly by category. Apparel and footwear have the highest return rates — often 20–40% online. Electronics return rates run 8–15%. A product with a 30% gross margin and a 15% return rate has an effective gross margin of approximately 30% × (1 − 0.15) − (return shipping and processing costs) — which can reduce the effective margin by 5–8 percentage points. The most common pricing mistake in ecommerce is anchoring price to competitor pricing without understanding whether that price point is sustainable given your specific cost structure. Setting your price at $24.99 because competitors are at $24.99 is only a valid strategy if your cost structure allows you to generate adequate margin at $24.99. If it does not, you are in a race to the bottom that you cannot win.
Cost-plus pricing starts with your COGS and works up to the required selling price. If your product costs $8 to source and you need a 50% gross margin, your minimum selling price before platform fees is $16. After a 15% Amazon referral fee and $3.50 FBA fulfillment fee, your actual minimum selling price to achieve 50% gross margin is approximately $24. This is your floor — the minimum price that generates acceptable margin.
Value-based pricing takes a different approach: what is the customer willing to pay for the outcome your product delivers? If your product saves customers $100/month and costs $8 to make, the economically rational price is somewhere well above $24, regardless of what cost-plus pricing would suggest. Premium positioning, strong branding, and differentiated value proposition allow value-based pricing that delivers substantially higher margins than commodity pricing.

Packaging is one of the most overlooked cost items in ecommerce margin calculations. Influencer marketing involves two very different cost structures depending on whether you are paying a flat fee for content or offering affiliate commissions on sales. Understanding which model makes sense for your brand and product requires understanding the margin impact of each.
Flat-fee influencer marketing: you pay a fixed amount for content creation and posting, regardless of sales generated. The cost is predictable but the return is uncertain. For brands with high gross margins, flat-fee partnerships can be extremely profitable when they perform. For brands with thin margins, a flat fee that does not generate a minimum threshold of sales destroys margin on every unit sold for the period of the campaign.
Affiliate commission marketing: you pay a percentage of each sale generated through the creator's link or code. This aligns creator incentives with sales outcomes and eliminates upfront cost. The tradeoff is that commissions reduce your per-unit margin on every sale the creator drives. Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) is the total revenue or profit a customer generates over their entire relationship with your brand. It is the most important metric for ecommerce brands that rely on paid customer acquisition, because it determines the maximum sustainable customer acquisition cost.
The basic LTV formula is: Average Order Value × Purchase Frequency × Customer Lifespan. A customer who buys twice per year at $50 average order value for three years has an LTV of $300. If your gross margin is 50%, the gross profit LTV is $150. If your fixed cost allocation per customer is $30, the net profit LTV is $120. This means you can spend up to $120 to acquire this customer and still generate profit — though most brands target spending 30–50% of LTV on acquisition to maintain healthy profitability margins.
LTV dramatically changes the math for subscription products, consumables, and repeat-purchase categories. A customer who buys a $30 skincare serum once per month has an LTV (at 12-month retention) of $360. A CAC of $40 that seemed borderline for a one-time purchase is extremely efficient for a subscription product with $360 LTV.
For marketplace sellers (Amazon, TikTok Shop), building LTV is harder because platforms own the customer relationship and restrict direct communication. Building an email list, driving customers to your own website, and building social following are the primary mechanisms for marketplace sellers to build LTV outside the platform's control.

Start with the platform calculator for your intended sales channel. Enter your target selling price, your landed COGS (product cost plus freight, customs, and any prep costs), and the platform-specific fees. The output tells you your gross margin at that price point. If the margin is below your minimum threshold, you have three options: negotiate a lower product cost, raise the price, or abandon the product.
Then layer in your other variable costs. Add your planned shipping cost (if seller-paid), expected return rate using the returns calculator, and any affiliate commissions you plan to offer. The remaining margin is your true contribution margin — the amount each unit sold contributes toward fixed costs and profit.
Run the ROAS calculator to understand your advertising break-even. If your contribution margin is $8 on a $30 product (26.7% contribution margin), your break-even ROAS is 3.75x. This tells you what advertising efficiency you need to achieve before your ads become profitable. If 3.75x ROAS is not achievable in your category, you need to improve margin or find a non-paid traffic channel.
Finally, model the scenario at scale. Does the margin improve materially as volume increases (through better packaging costs, lower COGS from larger orders, or fixed cost leverage)? Or is the unit economics problem structural, meaning it will not improve regardless of scale? Products with structural margin problems at any volume should not be pursued regardless of how attractive the market opportunity appears.

The honest answer is that no single platform has universally better margins — the right platform depends entirely on your product, price point, category, and operational capabilities. What the platforms do have in common is that none of them are free, and the true cost of selling on each is significantly higher than the headline fee suggests.
Amazon FBA is the most predictable and scalable platform for physical product sellers. The fee structure is complex but consistent, and the built-in traffic means you pay for discovery through advertising rather than through separate paid social campaigns. Total Amazon selling costs (referral fee + FBA fee + advertising) typically run 35–55% of revenue for established sellers, leaving gross margins of 25–45% on the contribution before COGS. Amazon works best for products with strong search demand, high repeat purchase potential, and sufficient margin to absorb all fee layers.
TikTok Shop's fee structure is lower in headline terms (6% platform commission vs Amazon's 15% referral fee in most categories), but the affiliate commission layer changes the math dramatically. A 20% affiliate commission plus 6% platform fee equals 26% of revenue gone before COGS, shipping, or operating costs. TikTok Shop works best for visually compelling products with strong impulse purchase appeal and sufficient margin to support creator commissions. The upside is velocity — a viral product on TikTok can sell thousands of units in days, compressing customer acquisition costs dramatically.
Shopify has the lowest platform transaction costs (2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on Shopify Payments) but the highest marketing cost burden. Building organic traffic to a Shopify store takes 12–24 months of consistent SEO and content effort. Paid social advertising fills the gap but at substantial cost. Shopify works best for brands with strong differentiation, repeat purchase potential, and the patience to build audience and organic traffic over time. The unit economics at maturity (established brand, low CAC, high LTV) are typically superior to any marketplace — but getting to maturity requires capital and time.
The most successful ecommerce businesses eventually operate across multiple channels: Amazon for search-driven demand and fulfillment scale, TikTok Shop for viral discovery and new customer acquisition, and Shopify for direct relationships, email capture, and margin optimization on returning customers. Multi-channel is more complex to manage but reduces dependence on any single platform's policy or fee changes.
Inventory management is not just a logistics function — it is a margin function. Every dollar tied up in excess inventory is a dollar not available for marketing, product development, or other margin-generating activities. Every stockout is lost revenue and potentially lost ranking on marketplace algorithms that reward consistent sales velocity.
The cost of holding inventory includes the product cost itself (capital tied up), storage fees (Amazon FBA charges by cubic foot per month, with peak-season surcharges October–December that can triple storage costs), the risk of obsolescence or damage, and insurance. For high-value products or perishables, holding costs can be substantial. A general rule of thumb in retail is that annual holding costs run 20–30% of inventory value — meaning $10,000 of inventory costs $2,000–$3,000 per year just to hold.
Reorder point calculation is the foundation of inventory management. Reorder point = (Average Daily Sales × Lead Time in Days) + Safety Stock. If you sell 15 units per day, your supplier takes 30 days to produce and ship, and you want 2 weeks of safety stock, your reorder point is (15 × 30) + (15 × 14) = 450 + 210 = 660 units. When inventory drops to 660 units, you place a new order. Missing this point causes stockouts; ordering too early causes excess inventory and holding costs.
Amazon-specific inventory considerations: Amazon's Inventory Performance Index (IPI) score affects how much storage space Amazon will allocate to your products. A low IPI score can result in storage limits that prevent you from sending enough inventory to avoid stockouts.
